LYRICS
[VERSE]

Snowy nights and Christmas lights
Icy window panes
Make me wish that we could be
Together again
And the windy winter avenues
Just don't seem the same
And the Christmas carols sound like blues
But the choir is not to blame

[CHORUS]

But it doesn't have to be that way
What we had should have never have ended
I'll be dropping by today
'Cause we could easily get it together tonight
It's only right

[VERSE]

Crowded stores, the corner Santa Claus
Tinseled afternoons
And the sidewalk bands that play their songs
Slightly out of tune
On the windy winter avenues
There walks a lonely man
And if I told you who he is
Well, I think you'd understand

[CHORUS]

But it doesn't have to be that way
What we had should have never have ended
I'll be dropping by today
'Cause we could easily get it together tonight
It's only right

No, it doesn't have to be that way
What we had should have never have ended
I'll be dropping by today
We could easily get it together tonight
It's only right

ADDITIONAL NOTES

For me and many others who love Jim Croce's It Doesn't Have To Be This Way, it is a Christmas song — indeed, it's on my list of favorite Christmas songs, and is played a lot on radio stations at Christmas time. It is a tender love song that is set against the backdrop of the Christmas season, which is everywhere in the images of the lyrics: snowy nights, Christmas lights, icy window panes, windy winter avenues, Christmas carols, crowded stores, the corner Santa Claus, tinseled afternoons, sidewalk bands. And Christmas chimes accompany the guitars to close the song in the spirit of the holiday. So I'm happy to include my cover of It Doesn't Have To Be This Way in my Holiday Music playlist.

The song has two moods — sadness (in the verses) and hopefulness (in the chorus) — and must be sung accordingly. The verses portray a lonely man missing his ex-lover. And the chorus expresses the hope of the lovers re-uniting during this Christmas season. For singing the sad verses. . . Neil Diamond has a wonderful phrase in his song, Song Sung Blue: "you can sing it with a cry in your voice". There are a lot of detailed things I could say about how I chose to sing the verses, but that one phrase, "I sang it with a cry in my voice", covers a lot of it.
