The song had a real powerhouse of composers: Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, and James Horner. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote some of the most well-known songs of all time, including You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' and On Broadway. James Horner was an American film composer who wrote the soundtracks for Titanic ("My Heart Will Go On"), Avatar, Braveheart, Field of Dreams, and many other well-known films. He added a classical quality to the song (and its orchestral arrangement), and a semi-operatic quality to the singing parts.
LYRICS [VERSE] Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight [VERSE] Somewhere out there someone's saying a prayer that we'll find one another in that big somewhere out there [PRE-CHORUS] And even though I know how very far apart we are it helps to think we might be wishin' on the same bright star And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby it helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky [CHORUS] Somewhere out there, if love can see us through then we'll be together somewhere out there out where dreams come true [INSTRUMENTAL — GUITAR SOLO] [PRE-CHORUS] And even though I know how very far apart we are it helps to think we might be wishin' on the same bright star And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby it helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky [CHORUS] Somewhere out there, if love can see us through then we'll be together somewhere out there out where dreams come true ADDITIONAL NOTES Guitar solo. That great electric guitar solo was composed and played by Steve Lukather, who is probably best known as the founder and lead guitarist of the band, Toto, but who is also a skilled session guitarist, playing on more than 1,500 albums, including Michael Jackson's Thriller. The song's meaning. Somewhere Out There was created for a movie musical, An Animated Tail. In that context, the song paints a picture of a brother and sister who have been separated by circumstances, and are trying to find each other again. However, when the song was released as a pop single separate from the movie, it was given a more romantic context, by having Linda Rondstadt and James Ingram sing the song, and having a music video that depicted them as lovers. While the lyrics could still be associated with lovers, but somehow mysteriously separated, when I sing the song, I sing it more from the viewpoint of lovers who have yet to meet in this life, but whose destiny it is to find each other. A beautiful melody. One of the song's composers, Barry Mann, often said of it that, if you didn't know when it was written you easily might think it had been written in the 1940's — it has a timeless quality. One way you can hear just how beautiful this song's melody is is by listening to a violin arrangement without any singing. It's exquisite! |
