ABOUT THIS SONG
release date of original song: 1943
release date of this version: November 24, 2024
length: 3 min 50 sec
music: Walter Kent
lyrics: Kim Gannon
vocals: Chris Tong
karaoke arrangement: KaraFun Karaoke

I'll Be Home For Christmas is a beautiful Christmas song, and another of my favorites. It touched the hearts of so many soldiers far from home in World War II, when Bing Crosby first sang the song in 1943. And it continues to touch everyone whose heart is moved by the Christmas vision of warmth, togetherness, light, and love. I'm singing to a karaoke arrangement that is based on the Carpenters' magical, musical arrangement of the song.

LYRICS

I'll BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS

I'm dreaming tonight
of a place I love,
even more than I usually do.
And although I know
it's a long way back,
I promise you. . .

I'll be home for Christmas
You can count on me.
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents by the tree.

Christmas eve will find me
Where the love light gleams.
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams.

I'll be home for Christmas
You can count on me.
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents by the tree.

Christmas eve will find me
Where the love light gleams
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams. . .

ADDITIONAL NOTES

I've gotten a really great response to my singing on this song: "magical", "you sound amazing. . .", "what a voice!". I especially like my singing too on this song, and so I've given some thought as to why it might sound particularly good.

First — the song is slow, and I find it really easy to sing it exactly the way I want it because of that slow speed. Second — I notice that, on the long-held notes, my voice has a very soothing, slow vibrato, that I keep repeating on the long notes throughout the song, and that meshes very well with the rhythm of the song. I think it's that vibrato, repeated at exactly the same rate over and over again, that's the most unusual thing about my singing on this song. Lastly — there's a pretty high reverb: the karaoke arrangement started out with a high reverb already, and then I kept the high reverb with my voice as well, creating a kind of "magical" sound and feeling that fits the mood of a Christmas song.
